Just my thoughts about photography at the time.

I waved at some astronauts.

I am not sure if they saw me, or if they were even looking, but I managed to see their space craft go whistling by tonight.

ISS arrival

In that 1st shot, you can just see the light trail as they swept across the sky at dusk. (Click these photos for a better view)

88 seconds of flight...

You can see them a lot easier in that shot. That is an 88 second exposure of them at their highest in the southern sky. Whizzing past the Milky Way.

This is just as they passed out of the sunlight and into darkess.

The last shot shows them dipping into the darkness of space. I am pretty sure I haven’t seen it before, and I know I was pretty excited for a 41 year old when I 1st spotted it. It still seems pretty amazing that you can see them, all the way up there in space.

Kudos to all involved.

Sony Party-shot IPT-DS1 Camera Dock

From the link below…

Sony recently announced the Party-shot personal photographer โ€“ โ€œan innovative camera dock that pans 360 degrees and tilts 24 degrees, automatically detects faces, adjusts composition and takes photos for you.โ€ Using the cameraโ€™s BIONZ image processor with its Face Detection and Smile Shutter, the Party-shot takes photos all by itself. Sounds fun.

Fun??? Sounds like another gimmick to me.

6/52

6/52, originally uploaded by norbography.

Week 6 of the 52 week project, and I had left it til the last day to get a photo sorted. It has been a long day, and I was drawing a blank as far as ideas go. I have a few in the idea bank, but they all require props. So while I was sitting there drawing a blank on a photo, and blog posts, it came to me. A photo of me drawing a blank.

I even hooked up the off flash gear and go myself into norbist mode.

norbist setup: Camera with 12-24mm lens sitting on lap. Flash sitting precariously on top of a tissue box on top of the printer. Snooted through the 80-200f/2.8L lens. Black beanie behind it all trying to soak up reflected light. That nearly worked too.

12 Things to Photograph Before You Die

Having never put any thought into this topic, I was surprised to find that I could make a list with about 50 places, objects and people I want to photograph at some point.

Of that list, I have no ambition to photographs wilder-beasts, but would love to get a shot of a leopard in full flight in the wild. Replace the Northern lights with the Southern lights (“Aurora Australis” ). It is an interesting list, that’s for sure.

The perfect portrait?

Oh no, my perfect face!

New Polaroid camera????

TIP

A bit more news over at The Impossible project. Their latest press release has this little titbit in it…

The Impossible Project โ€“ Camera
Re-positioning Instant Photography, Impossible will start selling a new Instant camera in the end of
2010. This camera will be a homage to the high quality photographic cameras of the golden
Polaroid years, transformed to the new analog customers of present times. Like the legendary SX-
70 camera, introduced in 1972, the new instant camera will feature a high quality glass lens
system, manual settings for professional photography as well as carefully developed unique and
characteristic design.
The development of this new Integral Instant Camera will be supported by Mr. Henny Waanders,
former head of camera development at Polaroid. Mr. Waanders is the brain behind many unique
Polaroid cameras and the best expert worldwide to transfer his unique expertise of Polaroid
cameras into a new modern interpretation of an Instant camera.

Whoohaaaa! That sounds a little bit exciting.

7 Tips for Perfect Sunrise and Sunset Photos

If you are one of those people that can actually drag themselves out of bed in the morning, you will sometimes be rewarded with stunning sunrises. If this is new to you, and you want to maximise your chances of that magical shot, have a read of the article linked below.

I have been asked a number of times why do sunrises when you can do sunsets? In my humblest of opinions, I think you get two different types of light. I don’t know what it is, but mornings tend to feel more metallic than afternoon light.

Here are two photos, one morning, one afternoon. Apart from a lot of people knowing I live on the East coast of Australia, which makes guessing very easy, it would be hard to tell which was which.

The Cost of Sleep

Joe Decker has written an interesting article on sleep, photographers and getting the best light. It reminds me of my road trips, where I use the middle of the day to travel, and try and get to my destination before sunset to use the golden light.
