Five Great Flash Techniques To Improve Your Photography Light

There is no getting around, the world is going flash crazy. Those Strobist people are the Mormons of the photographic world, always out promoting what they can do with off camera flashes and wireless triggers. They have even cracked me and I have bought a wireless kit, albeit a $19.00 one off eBay.

If you are keen to learn some lighting tricks, but don’t want to prey to the Jesus of Strobists, Mr Hobby, check out the link below. There are some great little tips there.

Smoke Photography Video Tutorial

I have seen hundreds of those pretty smoke trail shots on the interwebs, and whilst they don’t do much for me, you might like to have a go at them. Below is a guide on exactly how to do it. If you have a go, post your results here for everyone to see.

I waved at some astronauts.

I am not sure if they saw me, or if they were even looking, but I managed to see their space craft go whistling by tonight.

ISS arrival

In that 1st shot, you can just see the light trail as they swept across the sky at dusk. (Click these photos for a better view)

88 seconds of flight...

You can see them a lot easier in that shot. That is an 88 second exposure of them at their highest in the southern sky. Whizzing past the Milky Way.

This is just as they passed out of the sunlight and into darkess.

The last shot shows them dipping into the darkness of space. I am pretty sure I haven’t seen it before, and I know I was pretty excited for a 41 year old when I 1st spotted it. It still seems pretty amazing that you can see them, all the way up there in space.

Kudos to all involved.

Sony Party-shot IPT-DS1 Camera Dock

From the link below…

Sony recently announced the Party-shot personal photographer – “an innovative camera dock that pans 360 degrees and tilts 24 degrees, automatically detects faces, adjusts composition and takes photos for you.” Using the camera’s BIONZ image processor with its Face Detection and Smile Shutter, the Party-shot takes photos all by itself. Sounds fun.

Fun??? Sounds like another gimmick to me.

6/52

6/52, originally uploaded by norbography.

Week 6 of the 52 week project, and I had left it til the last day to get a photo sorted. It has been a long day, and I was drawing a blank as far as ideas go. I have a few in the idea bank, but they all require props. So while I was sitting there drawing a blank on a photo, and blog posts, it came to me. A photo of me drawing a blank.

I even hooked up the off flash gear and go myself into norbist mode.

norbist setup: Camera with 12-24mm lens sitting on lap. Flash sitting precariously on top of a tissue box on top of the printer. Snooted through the 80-200f/2.8L lens. Black beanie behind it all trying to soak up reflected light. That nearly worked too.

12 Things to Photograph Before You Die

Having never put any thought into this topic, I was surprised to find that I could make a list with about 50 places, objects and people I want to photograph at some point.

Of that list, I have no ambition to photographs wilder-beasts, but would love to get a shot of a leopard in full flight in the wild. Replace the Northern lights with the Southern lights (“Aurora Australis” ). It is an interesting list, that’s for sure.

The perfect portrait?

Oh no, my perfect face!

Check! 🙂
