The ### Projects, they aren’t for me.

This will come as no surprise to the people that know me, but I am pulling the pin on the 52 Week self portrait project, and the iPhone 365 Day project. I thought it would push me. I thought I would enjoy the challenge. I thought I might have grown up and wouldn’t get bored with it. I was wrong.

That said, I did manage 36 stunningly gorgeous self portraits. That’s a whopping 69.32% finished.

The iPhone 365 project was less successful. 50 shots so far, that equates to 13.69%. A massive failure in anyone’s books. Given the fact that I carry the bastard with me everywhere I go, it is a disappointment.

What does this mean for my photography? Bugger all really. I will still be out there pointing my light capture box at all manner of things, just not as part of a strictly regimented project. Having to meet a deadline isn’t one of my strong points and I get bored easily. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Something else it has shown me is the fantastic effort made by people like Kendra “Chapendra” Sundvall, who is on her 4th 365 Day project, and still going strong.

The uber talented Lakshal “Lucky” Perera, who last year produced some terrific work in his 52 Weeks Project.

Also, Andrew “Andrew G” Gunsberg is currently about 75% of the way through his own 365 Day project, and it has all sorts of goodness in it.

It takes a hell of a lot of patience, talent, discipline and creativity to finish these things off, and I don’t have an overflowing cup of any of them. I tips me lid to all the people out there doing this sort of thing. Well done.

N.B. If you know of other great 365D or 52W projects, let me know in the comments.

Seven ‘togs I admire.

Here is a list of photographers that I admire, and the reasons why. It really is worth the time to have a look through their works.

Mick Orlosky  http://www.flickr.com/photos/emayoh/
Mick has been doing some amazing work with film lately. All developed at home, which makes it even more impressive. He always seems to be posting high quality shots that should be seen by more people.

Alex Wise  http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexwise/
Alex is the long exposure whisperer. His waterscapes are nothing less than stunning. How can a guy this young be so good at photography?

Andrew Gunsberg  http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewgunsberg/
Australians will know him as Andrew G from Australian Idol on the tele and the Top 40 countdown on the radio. What most people don’t know is that he is a hell of a photographer as well.

Crusty Dolphin  http://www.flickr.com/photos/crustydolphin/
Charlie, like Andrew above, and Kendra below, is doing the 365 Day project. She has slowly turned into a strobist to be reckoned with. The people doing the 365 Day project have nothing but admiration from me. Where do they get there ideas?

Chapendra  http://www.flickr.com/photos/chaparral/
Like Andrew and Charlie, Kendra is doing the 365 Day project. But she has been doing it long enough to have done a shot every day for over 1000 days!!! Mick actually interviewed her on his Blog about it a while back.

schoolbookdepository  http://www.flickr.com/photos/schoolbookdepository/
Although he doesn’t post much on Flickr of late, check out some of his earlier work. He has probably got gear worth more than my house, but boy can he use it.

Vitek  http://www.flickr.com/photos/vitek/
V is like an angry Trent Parke. Not shy to voice an opinion in Flickr groups, he is usually listened to because he takes such stunning photos. His street photography is amongst the best I have seen.

The 52 week project for charity.

Do you ever lose your Phojo? Phojo, for the people scratching their heads, is photographic mojo. Do you ever wonder where the next photo is coming from? I see it all the time on photographic forums and Flickr. People pleading for inspiration. They feel they have lost their phojo and fear it may never come back. I admit, it has happened to me on many occasions.

So often, when people bare their souls on the interwebs, they get such a varied range of advice, it must be hard to know where to start. But, in one of those cyber oddities that are all to rare these days, when people claim to have lost their phojo, I hear the same piece of advice. “Have you tried the 365/52 projects?” Again, if you are wondering, they are projects on Flickr. The 365 group and the 52 weeks group are both based around a similar premise. Take a self portrait either every day for a year, or every week for a year. Easy. Well, not so easy it turns out.

Not Ireland!

Imagine, every day, you have to take a photo of yourself. That’s, every single day for a year! This from dictionary.com. Narcissism describes the trait of excessive self-love, based on self-image or ego. Now I am not saying that the thousands of people who are involved in the 365 project are in love with themselves, but I bet their aren’t too many emos doing it either. I really don’t think I have the head for the 365 project. So, how about the 52 week project. Surely, even I can manage one self portrait per week for a year. Or can I? Do I want 52 photos of me through out the year? I doubt even my darling wife would! But, I need a challenge, so, as of July 1, I am into it. The 365 project is just too damned daunting for me, but I reckon I can manage the 52 week project.

To spice things up even more, I am going to try and make it a charity event. I am not 100% sure how I can manage this at the moment, but I will give it some thought over the next fortnight and keep people advised. I will look into some childrens charities and see what would be the best one to support.
